Compare Free Proofreading Services
This is a list of services that have some form of free essay editing or free proofreading available. I went through the first 10 pages (100 results) on Google looking for "free essay editing" to find these 10 services. There is no guarantee of accuracy in this survey. Go ahead and compare!
As you can see there are two types of options. First is a live editor who looks at your work. This is what most people need, as I haven't seen a computer that doesn't miss many obvious errors. The second are software solutions. WhiteSmoke is downloaded and run on your own computer (however, you need to be on-line). I use it myself do double-check my work. It has superior capabilities to the built-in grammar checker in MS Word. Grammarly looks very good, and it's instant and on-line. You can try a free sample, or purchase a subscription. Paperrater is probably the closest thing to a free on-line editor that you will find. Cut and paste your paper and it will show you most of the errors. But it won't catch plagiarism.

It's a computer program, so it doesn't read for sense. It will catch most sentence fragments. I also tested it for plagiarism with a paper I knew was copied from the Internet, and it failed to notice. It only highlighted a few phrases that occurred on other documents, giving it an 83% score in originality. Additionally, in my test it missed some bad wording and had no suggestions for improvement of an obviously weak paragraph. However, for grammar, it's the best free on-line instant editing service I've found so far. If it doesn't meet your need, then you might have to pay for some professional editing.
