Graphic Design Services

"Free" Ads vs Inexpensive Ads

Many publications offer free design services for advertisers. However, in order to do this, customers are usually restricted to one or two sets of changes after their ad is designed. (Check the fine print in their ad rate sheet.) Their designers are rushing through dozens of ads a day and can't give you the kind of individual attention you deserve. Then, if you don't accept the ad which they have created for "free", they charge you their high studio rates to adjust the design to your satisfaction.

HyperGraphix will tell you in advance the cost of setting your ad, then produce it to your satisfaction. No extra charges for additional changes. Most ads can be produced for $40. And if you want to run the same ad again with only a small change, we'll re-do it for a mere $20. Then we'll send it in electronic format to the publication so they can run it. And many publications which will typeset your ad for "free" will agree to give you a discount for providing them with an ad which is already camera ready. Sometimes the discount can be more than what we charge for typesetting the ad. (Hint: it's really not more time consuming to typeset a large ad than a small one; why do they usually charge you a typesetting fee based on the size of the ad? It's the complexity of the ad which counts.)

What does "camera-ready" mean?

When something is ready to be printed on a printing press, the first step in the printing process is to take a picture of it with a special camera. The negative image from the film in this camera is used to make the plate and the plate sits in the printing press and puts the image on the paper as it passes by. Different printing processes have different requirements for camera-ready.

Camera-ready images can vary from 600 to 2400 dots per inch resolution. Higher resolutions may be required for special processes. Most camera-ready images are around 1200 dpi. These images can be on paper or on film and cost between $10 and $15 per page to prepare. Most publications, however, are prepared electronically, so the publishers are usually quite happy to accept images in electronic format which means you don't need to incur the cost of camera-ready output.

Newsprint is very cheap paper. It is not made to last. It tends to absorb ink therefore it doesn't need as high a resolution image for camera-ready as does a magazine. A 600 dpi camera-ready image is perfectly acceptable for printing on newsprint.

Company Literature

A standard 3 panel folder can be produced for as little as $90 (not including printing). You supply the wording and we'll format it to your satisfaction. You can take the camera ready printout to the printer of your choice or we'll arrange printing with one of the printers with whom we have a good working relationship. The factors which influence the cost of a folder are mostly the number of copies you want to print and the type of paper on which you print.

For example a large company may want its newsletter and web site to convey a consistent image. HyperGraphix can produce both with content supplied by the company's own staff. Documents produced for paper publication can also be easily converted for distribution through the world wide web in pdf format.Product catalogues, newsletters, and order forms are all good candidates for pdf publishing. We can convert documents which we have created for you or documents which you have created yourself.

When you work with your desktop publisher as a team, you can produce your documents for a very reasonable price. (See "How to save money on desktop publishing.")
